{"id":248,"date":"2016-10-05T05:44:54","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T05:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterluscher.com\/desert_trip\/?p=248"},"modified":"2016-10-05T05:44:54","modified_gmt":"2016-10-05T05:44:54","slug":"golden-b-c-to-kelowna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/?p=248","title":{"rendered":"Golden B.C to Kelowna"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sept 28 &#8211; Golden B.C to Kelowna<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We woke up to another fresh camping morning in time to see the sun rise over the hills and cast a nice hue over the mountains in the distance.\u00a0 Some hot chocolate made on our camp stove and some PB&amp;J-wiches later, we were ready for the day.<\/p>\n<p>I was a bit bummed out that we hadn&#8217;t flown the Phantom 3 since Dinosaur National Park (Were we allowed to do that? I&#8217;m a bit unsure&#8230;) so we set it up and surveyed some easy flight plans.\u00a0 When we fired it up there was a warning of &#8220;strong radio interference &#8216;fly with caution&#8217; &#8220;.\u00a0 The flight route was already a bit dicey (requiring me to navigate through some nearby trees) and we took the &#8220;better safe than sorry&#8221; route and packed up without starting the motors.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still looking for a few practice days to gain enough confidence to fly it in a bit of wind and over uncertain terrain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-207 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-250x167.jpg\" alt=\"img_6671\" width=\"434\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-250x167.jpg 250w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-380x253.jpg 380w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-310x207.jpg 310w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671-260x173.jpg 260w, https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6671.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, we went to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernlightswildlife.com\/\">Northern Lights Wolf Center<\/a> to visit and learn about the wolves there.\u00a0 Fun fact: despite their varying colours and size, there are only <strong>two<\/strong> wolf species (The Grey Wolf and the Red Wolf\u00a0 [a wolf-coyote cross])&#8230; well, that was according to the Wolf Center.\u00a0 There does, however, appear to be some disagreement on that point:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/28\/science\/red-eastern-gray-wolves.html\">The first large study of North American wolf genomes<\/a> has found that there is only one species on the continent: the gray wolf. Two other purported species, the Eastern wolf and the red wolf, are mixes of gray wolf and coyote DNA, the scientists behind the study concluded.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The wolf is known as a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/keystone-species\/\">keystone species<\/a>&#8221; and is protected in the National Parks.\u00a0\u00a0 Even in Canada, though, a wolf cull has been approved yearly in order to keep the wolf populations in check in preference to Elk.\u00a0 According to the Wolf Center, though, this is simply bad science as, in fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddeeradvocate.com\/opinion\/Wolf_cull_defies_logic.html\">wolf play no significant role in reducing the Elk population<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6677.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-208 alignleft\" 1930&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/intelligenttravel.nationalgeographic.com\/2015\/02\/23\/the-wolves-of-yellowstone\/\"> wolves were entirely eliminated from Yellowstone<\/a> and, as a result, other predators left, the deer &amp; elk populations exploded and ate up vast areas of vegetation further disrupting the balance.\u00a0 Beaver left (they are also a keystone species involved in creating wetlands that other animal &amp; insects &amp; birds rely on) and even<a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/ua\/ncs\/archives\/2016\/apr\/studies-confirm-effect-wolves-elk-tree-recovery-yellowstone-national-park\"> entire tree species began to die out<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1995\/96, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ypf.org\/site\/PageServer?pagename=WHAT_wildlife_wolf_project\">fifteen wolves from Alberta were released in Yellowstone<\/a> and within two years the ecosystem had begun to heal &#8212; even the beaver had begun to return.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a fascinating story but, unfortunately, a lesson not learned in many areas of North America where the wolf cull continues.\u00a0 Obviously, this is a complex and controversial subject but, if nothing else, our visit to the Wolf Center gave us a lot to think about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6694.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-210 alignleft\" Park.\u00a0 We wished that we had much more time because the area called to us.\u00a0 It was as beautiful as the Banff area but felt more &#8220;off the beaten track&#8221; and low-key &#8212; just our style.\u00a0 We shot through a bit quickly and even missed a few prime glacier viewing pull-offs (due in no small way to the fact that pulling off meant certain death by the ever-present 18+ wheelers sitting six inches off our rear bumper).<a href=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC06646.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" Spike<\/a> or who remember the TV series <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_National_Dream_(miniseries)\">The National Dream<\/a> might have been keen to stop (as I was) at the location just off\u00a0 of Hwy 1 near Revelstoke of where the actual <a href=\"http:\/\/heritagebcstops.com\/trans-canada-tour-east\/the-last-spike\">Last Spike was driven in 1885<\/a>.\u00a0 As fortunate coincidence would have it, we were just in time to catch the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockymountaineer.com\/en_US\/routes_and_packages\/canadian_rocky\">Rocky Mountaineer<\/a> as it pulled away from the station &#8212; passengers waiving a goodbye to the small crowd watching them depart.\u00a0 It was like a movie scene.<a href=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_6721.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-215 alignright\" to the hospitality of Charlene Hodgson, John&#8217;s Sister.\u00a0 She had some interesting and enthusiastic conversation, fantastic Okanagan wine, appetizers, a kebab BBQ, and more waiting for us.\u00a0\u00a0 I must tell you, we&#8217;ve a lot to &#8220;Pay Forward&#8221; from this trip so far already and Charlene went all out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/peterluscher.com\/deserttrip\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/DSC06520.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-184 alignleft\" ground floor&#8221;.\u00a0 With no word of a lie, it&#8217;s that and bag of chips, and more.\u00a0\u00a0 The open concept and sublime decorations will satisfy the artist and bohemian side in anyone and the practicality and utilitarianism of the space will similarly impress those with a penchant for pragmatic design.\u00a0 Kudos Charlene &#8212; you did a great job!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a
